Lauca National Park, in the Arica y Parinacota Region of Chile high in the Andes near the Bolivian border, was established in 1970 and covers about 1,379 square kilometers between roughly 3,200 and 6,342 meters elevation. Its volcanoes, including the Payachata group, Guallatiri and Acotango, and its lakes Chungara and Cotacotani, support more than 140 bird species, vicunas, llamas, alpacas and cougars, and the colonial village of Parinacota sits within its boundaries.
