Tolhuaca National Park, in Malleco Province of the Araucania Region of Chile near Curacautin, was created on October 16, 1935 from part of the Malleco National Reserve, itself the first wildlife protection area in Chile and South America, with a second section added in 1985, and it now covers about 6,474 hectares between 700 and 1,821 meters elevation. Its Andean foothill forest includes the small lakes Laguna Malleco and Laguna Verde, the source of the Malleco River, and views of the Tolhuaca volcano.
