Sibiloi National Park protects the northeastern shore of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, established in 1973 to safeguard wildlife and paleontological sites and covering about 1,570.85 square kilometers of semi-desert plains and volcanic formations including Mount Sibiloi. Known as part of the cradle of mankind, the park contains the Koobi Fora fossil site, which has contributed more to understanding human evolution than any other single location on the continent, and in 1997 was inscribed with the rest of the Lake Turkana National Parks as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its wildlife includes gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe and lion, with African skimmer and greater flamingo among its birds.
