Palo Verde National Park, established in 1978 in Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, about 30 kilometers west of Canas, covers roughly 184 square kilometers of the Tempisque River valley within the Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area. The IUCN category II park protects tropical dry forest and the extensive marshlands of the Tempisque River across fifteen distinct topographical zones, and its wetlands were designated a Ramsar site of international importance in 1991. It is recognized as an Important Bird Area, home to species including scarlet macaws and wood storks.
