Karoo National Park lies near the town of Beaufort West in South Africa's Western Cape and was established in 1979, covering about 768 square kilometers of the Great Karoo semi-desert. Divided by the Nuweveld portion of the Great Escarpment into the Lower Karoo plains and the Upper Karoo plateau, the park's dwarf shrubland vegetation supports springbok, gemsbok, black wildebeest, and Cape mountain zebra. It holds the greatest number of tortoise species of any park in the world, five in total, along with significant geological formations and numerous bird species.
