The Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is a peace park straddling the border between Namibia and South Africa, formed in 2003 when Namibia's Ai-Ais Hot Springs Game Park was joined with South Africa's Richtersveld National Park by agreement between the two countries' presidents. Covering about 6,045 square kilometers across the Karas region of Namibia and the Northern Cape of South Africa, it protects a rugged mega ecosystem of high mountains and valleys that is exceptionally biodiverse for such an arid area, with more than 360 plant species recorded within a single square kilometer despite minimal rainfall. The park encompasses the Fish River Canyon, Africa's largest canyon, and preserves the traditional pastoral lands and language of the Nama people.
