The Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a protected wetland on the southeast bank of the Senegal River in northern Senegal, near the city of Saint-Louis, covering about 160 square kilometres of floodplain, channels and ponds. Established on April 14, 1971 and classified as an IUCN Category II national park, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and recognized as a Ramsar wetland in 1977. The sanctuary shelters close to three million birds across roughly 395 species during the migratory season, alongside sizeable populations of crocodiles and manatees, making it one of the most significant bird reserves in West Africa.
