Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Golden Gate Highlands National Park lies in South Africa's Free State near the Lesotho border and was established in 1963, covering about 340 square kilometers. It is valued chiefly for its scenery rather than its wildlife, with golden, ochre, and orange sandstone cliffs and outcrops, most notably the Brandwag rock formation, along with caves and shelters holding San rock paintings. The park is the Free State's only national park and forms part of the planned Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Conservation Area, and it hosts mongooses, eland, zebras, and more than 100 bird species, as well as significant fossil finds including the oldest known dinosaur embryos, belonging to Massospondylus.
