Mokala National Park lies near Kimberley in South Africa's Northern Cape and was established on 19 June 2007, replacing the former Vaalbos National Park, and covers about 265 square kilometers. Its name comes from the Setswana word for the camel thorn tree, characteristic of the area, and its sandy plains and calcrete rock outcrops sit in a transition zone between savanna and Karoo vegetation. The park was created to safeguard endangered species including Cape buffalo, black rhino, and roan antelope, and it also preserves San rock engravings and Second Boer War battlefield sites.
