Tankwa Karoo National Park

Tankwa Karoo National Park lies about 70 kilometers west of Sutherland on the border of South Africa's Northern Cape and Western Cape provinces, established in 1986 and covering about 1,436 square kilometers of Succulent Karoo habitat, one of the most arid regions of South Africa and part of a recognized biodiversity hotspot alongside the Cape Floral Kingdom. Before the park's creation, only a two square kilometer reserve protected this vegetation. The park now conserves unique succulent plant genera across sparse shrubland and dwarf shrubland, supporting 188 recorded bird species and mammals including leopards, meerkats, and springbok.
