Chitwan National Park is the first national park of Nepal, established in 1973 as Royal Chitwan National Park in the subtropical lowlands of the country's Terai region. The park protects one of the last significant populations of the greater one-horned rhinoceros along with Bengal tigers, gharial crocodiles and more than 500 bird species across a landscape of sal forest, grassland and river floodplain, and it is administered by Nepal's Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 in recognition of its exceptional biodiversity.
