Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park spans Gunma, Nagano and Niigata prefectures in central Japan, designated on September 7, 1949 and significantly expanded in 1956, covering about 1,482 square kilometers. It is built around active and dormant volcanoes, including Mount Asama, the most active volcano on Honshu, and Mount Kusatsu-Shirane. The park is a major destination for skiing, hiking and onsen hot springs, home to resorts such as Shiga Kogen and connected by the Shiga-Kusatsu-Kogen route to the resort town of Karuizawa.
