Unzen-Amakusa National Park

Unzen-Amakusa National Park spans Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures on Kyushu, Japan, first designated in 1934 as Unzen National Park and expanded and renamed in 1956 after the Amakusa islands were added. Covering about 283 square kilometers, it is named for the active volcano Mount Unzen on the Shimabara Peninsula and also takes in the Amakusa islands in the Yatsushiro Sea, an area closely tied to the early history of Christianity in Japan and the Kakure Kirishitan, or hidden Christian, tradition.
