Bavarian Forest National Park

National Park

Established in 1970, the Bavarian Forest National Park in eastern Bavaria, Germany, along the border with the Czech Republic, was the first national park created in Germany. Following its expansion in 1997 it forms, together with the adjoining Bohemian Forest on the Czech side, the largest contiguous forested area in Central Europe, dominated by Norway spruce and European beech across a low mountain range. The park is managed under a philosophy that lets natural processes proceed largely undisturbed, supporting species such as Eurasian lynx, otters and capercaillie along with more than 1,800 recorded beetle species, and it draws more than 700,000 visitors a year to an otherwise economically underdeveloped region.
