Pollino National Park

National Park

Pollino National Park is an Italian national park in the southern Italian peninsula, spanning the provinces of Cosenza, Matera and Potenza and named for the Pollino mountain massif. Established in 1993, it covers 1,925.65 square kilometers across Basilicata and Calabria, split between roughly 88,650 hectares on the Lucanian side and 103,915 hectares on the Calabrian side, making it the largest national park in Italy and one of the fifty largest in the world. It is home to the oldest known tree in Europe, a Heldreich's pine estimated at about 1,230 years old, and its symbol is the rare Bosnian pine; the common beech is the park's most prevalent tree, alongside a variety of important medicinal herbs. Since its inclusion in UNESCO's global list of geoparks in November 2015, the park has also been recognized as a World Heritage Site.
