Jasmund National Park protects the Jasmund peninsula in the northeast of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. At only 30 square kilometers it is the smallest national park in Germany, established in September 1990 by the last government of East Germany shortly before reunification. The park is known for the Rügen chalk cliffs, the highest of which, the Konigsstuhl, rises 118 meters above the Baltic Sea, and for the beech forest inland from the cliffs, whose highest point, the Piekberg, reaches 161 meters. On June 25, 2011 that beech forest was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Primeval Beech Forests of Europe designation for its undisturbed condition and ecological history reaching back to the last ice age.
