Berchtesgaden National Park, established on August 1, 1978, is Germany's only alpine national park, lying in the Berchtesgadener Land district of Bavaria on the border with Austria, within the municipalities of Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden and Schonau am Konigssee. Covering about 210 square kilometers of the Berchtesgaden Alps, it includes the Watzmann massif, whose Mittelspitze summit at 2,713 meters is the highest point of the German Berchtesgaden Alps, as well as the Blaueis glacier and most of Lake Konigssee. UNESCO designated the wider area a Biosphere Reserve in 1990.
