Eifel National Park, established on January 1, 2004, was Germany's 14th national park and the first in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It covers about 10,700 hectares near the towns of Mechernich, Duren and Aachen and forms part of the wider High Fens-Eifel Nature Park, a cross-border conservation area with Belgium created in 1960. At its founding the park carried the designation of national park in development.
