Hainich National Park, established on December 31, 1997, was Germany's 13th national park and remains the only one in the state of Thuringia. Covering about 75 square kilometers near the town of Bad Langensalza, it was created to protect an ancient native beech forest. In 2011 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests site, recognized for documenting the ecological history of the beech tree and the dynamics of European forests since the last ice age.

In 2011, the park was added to the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe World Heritage Site because of its testimony to the ecological history of the beech tree and the dynamics of forests in Europe since the Last Glacial Period.
