Lower Saxon Wadden Sea National Park, established in 1986 and headquartered in Wilhelmshaven, protects roughly 345,800 hectares of the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony, Germany. It takes in the East Frisian Islands together with the mudflats and salt marshes between the Dollart bay on the Dutch border and the Outer Elbe shipping channel near Cuxhaven. In June 2009 it was inscribed, together with the Schleswig-Holstein and Dutch Wadden Sea areas, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique intertidal ecosystem and high biodiversity.
