Muritz National Park lies midway between Berlin and Rostock in the Mecklenburg lake district of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, taking in much of the Muritz lakeland within the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte. Established on October 1, 1990, it covers 318 square kilometers and is served by the Muritzeum visitor center near the town of Waren. In 2011 its beech forests were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Primeval Beech Forests of Europe designation, recognized for their unspoiled condition and for documenting the ecological history of Europe since the last ice age.
