Wicklow Mountains National Park

Wicklow Mountains National Park covers mountains, forests, lakes and historic sites mostly in County Wicklow, with parts reaching into South Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Rathdown, south of Dublin city. It officially opened in 1991, following a 1988 announcement by then Taoiseach Charles Haughey, and covers about 205 square kilometers after expansions added land in 2009 and 2016. The park holds Glendalough, with its early medieval monastic remains associated with Saint Kevin, alongside blanket bogs, grassland and woodland habitats that support protected bat species, otters and birds such as hen harriers and peregrine falcons. It is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service of Ireland, which is also responsible for nature conservation, research, education, public safety and relations between the park and surrounding communities.
