Circeo National Park

Circeo National Park is an Italian national park founded in 1934 on the orders of Benito Mussolini, following advice from Senator Raffaele Bastianelli, to preserve the last remnants of the Pontine Marshes as they were being reclaimed. It occupies a strip of coastal land running from Anzio to Terracina, reaching roughly from Pontinia in the north to Sabaudia in the south, and also includes a forested sector on the mainland near San Felice Circeo and the island of Zannone. Covering about 84.40 square kilometers, it is the only national park in Italy to occupy solely a plain and coastal area.
