Val Grande National Park

Val Grande National Park is a protected area in Piedmont, in northern Italy, known especially for its High Alps landscapes and often described as the largest wilderness area in the Alps. Officially established on 2 March 1992, with its area extended on 24 June 1998, the park covers about 150 square kilometers within the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, shared among 13 municipalities. It remains unpopulated, having been abandoned after the Second World War when residents left following German military actions against Italian resistance fighters in June 1944.
