Dzūkija National Park

Dzūkija National Park lies in the Dzūkija region of Lithuania, about 100 kilometers southwest of the capital Vilnius and 100 kilometers south of Kaunas. It was established on 23 April 1991 by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania to protect the territory of the historic Dainava land, and consists mainly of marshes, lakes, rivers, swamps, inland dunes and mountain ridges on the banks of the Nemunas river, covering 584.53 square kilometers of the most extensive protected forest in the country. The park belongs to both the Association of Baltic National Parks and the Federation of European National Parks.
