Sassen-Bunsow Land National Park lies on Spitsbergen island in Norway's Svalbard archipelago, opened in 2003 and covering about 1,230 square kilometers. Its glaciers and glacially carved valleys include Eskerdalen, home to one of Spitsbergen's most impressive waterfalls, and the historic hunting station Fredheim, built by sealer and whaler Hilmar Nois on the Sassen river; reindeer live within the park, which is managed under IUCN Category II by the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management.
