Picos de Europa National Park

Picos de Europa National Park lies in the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain, spanning the autonomous communities of Asturias, Cantabria, and Castile and Leon. Established in 1918 as the first national park in Spain, it began around the Lakes of Covadonga and grew through later expansions to cover about 671 square kilometers today. The park's limestone massifs show the marks of past glacial erosion, with elevation ranging from about 75 meters along the Deva River to 2,648 meters at Torre de Cerredo, and it was recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2003. About 1,300 people live within its boundaries, and it remains a popular destination for hikers and trekkers.
