Sierra Nevada National Park

Sierra Nevada National Park spans the provinces of Granada and Almeria in Andalusia, southern Spain, stretching from the Alpujarra through El Marquesado to the Lecrin Valley, and was designated on January 14, 1999. Covering 85,883 hectares, it was once Spain's largest national park until another park's expansion in 2019, and it holds more than 20 peaks above 3,000 meters, topped by Mulhacen at 3,479 meters. Its isolated southern position let cold-adapted species that migrated south during the last ice age survive as the climate warmed, and the park protects about 2,100 plant species, more than 60 of them found nowhere else, along with wildlife such as Spanish ibex, wild boar, golden eagles, and kestrels. It is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and hosts Europe's southernmost ski resort.
