Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park covers 51.07 square kilometers of volcanic terrain in the municipalities of Tinajo and Yaiza in southwestern Lanzarote, in Spain's Canary Islands, and was established in 1974. It is the only national park in Spain that is entirely geological in character, shaped mainly by eruptions between 1730 and 1736 with further activity as recently as 1824, and its symbol is the sculpture El Diablo by the artist Cesar Manrique. Underground temperatures still reach 100 to 600 degrees Celsius at a depth of 13 meters, a phenomenon put on display for visitors. The whole island of Lanzarote was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, with Timanfaya as one of its core zones, and public access to the park is limited to guided coach tours and authorized footpaths.
