Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site covers the southernmost part of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago of 138 islands off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1988, it protects about 1,470 square kilometers of land and sea, and its name means Islands of Beauty in the Haida language. The reserve is jointly managed by the Canadian government and the Haida Nation, whose people have inhabited the islands for an estimated 8,000 to 14,000 years, and it includes a UNESCO World Heritage component preserving traditional Haida village remains, among them standing totem poles and cedar longhouses.

Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, National Marine Conservation Area, and Haida Heritage Site, commonly called Gwaii Haanas, lies in the southernmost part of Haida Gwaii, an archipelago about 130 kilometres off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. It protects an archipelago of 138 islands, the largest being Moresby Island and the southernmost Kunghit Island. The name means Islands of Beauty in the Haida language, and the site is jointly managed with the Haida people, whose oral histories and pollen evidence place human presence on the islands back thousands of years. It was first protected as South Moresby National Park Reserve in 1988 and formally established under cooperative management as Gwaii Haanas in 1993.
