Yosemite National Park is a national park of the United States in the central Sierra Nevada of California, established on October 1, 1890, building on a state-managed grant President Abraham Lincoln had signed in 1864. The park is renowned for its granite cliffs, including El Capitan and Half Dome, its waterfalls, and its groves of giant sequoia, and John Muir's advocacy for its protection helped found the American conservation movement and the US National Park Service itself. It draws millions of visitors annually to Yosemite Valley while protecting a much larger high-Sierra wilderness beyond it.
