Arthur's Pass National Park

Arthur's Pass National Park sits in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand, established in 1929 and covering about 1,185 square kilometers of mostly mountainous terrain. State Highway 73 crosses the park, dividing a drier eastern side of mountain beech forest and wide riverbeds from a wetter western side of dense rainforest with podocarp and rata trees. The Department of Conservation manages the park for tramping, skiing, hunting, and mountaineering alongside conservation of native species such as the orange-fronted parakeet and blue duck.
