Nitmiluk National Park lies in Australia's Northern Territory, about 244 kilometers southeast of Darwin and 23 kilometers northeast of the town of Katherine, centered on the gorges of the Katherine River. Established on October 19, 1977, it covers about 2,947 square kilometers. Its principal feature, Nitmiluk Gorge, consists of thirteen connected gorges cut through ancient sandstone with rapids and waterfalls between them, suitable for canoeing and swimming in the dry season, though saltwater crocodiles that enter during the wet season are relocated. In the Jawoyn language Nitmiluk means place of the cicada dreaming, reflecting the site's deep significance to the Jawoyn people, who serve as the park's traditional custodians.
