Fernando de Noronha Marine National Park protects most of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago, a group of 21 volcanic islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean about 220 miles off the coast of Brazils Pernambuco state. In 1988, 70 percent of the archipelagos area was established as a national marine park, and in 2001 UNESCO designated the islands a World Heritage Site for their importance as a feeding ground for tuna, sharks, sea turtles, and marine mammals. Only the main island is inhabited, by around 3,100 residents.
