Huerquehue National Park, whose Mapudungun name means the messenger place, lies in the Andean foothills of the Araucania Region of Chile east of Pucon and has been protected since June 9, 1967. Covering about 125 square kilometers between 720 and 2,000 meters elevation, it holds ancient araucaria (monkey puzzle) forest, now a vulnerable species, around some twenty lakes and lagoons including Tinquilco Lake.
