Laguna San Rafael National Park, on the Pacific coast of the Aysen Region of Chile, was established in 1959 and covers about 17,420 square kilometers, including much of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field. Named for the San Rafael Lagoon formed by glacial retreat, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1979, receives more than 6,000 millimeters of rain a year at its highest elevations, and its peaks include Monte San Valentin and Cerro Arenales; its wildlife ranges from black browed albatrosses to Chilean dolphins and southern right whales.
