Pali Aike National Park

Pali Aike National Park, in the Magallanes Region of Chile near Punta Arenas, takes its name from a Tehuelche phrase meaning desolate place and was established on October 23, 1970, covering about 5,030 hectares of the Pali Aike volcanic field around the Pali Aike crater and its thousand year old lava formations. The park holds major archaeological significance, with human remains and stone tools dated to about 11,000 years before the present among the oldest evidence of human occupation in South America.
