The Salar del Huasco protects a salt flat dotted with ponds and seasonal wetlands in the Pica commune of the Tarapaca Region of Chile, about 150 kilometers east of Iquique, and covers roughly 1,100.49 square kilometers at an elevation near 3,770 meters. Designated a Ramsar wetland in 1996 for its flamingo populations of more than 3,000 birds, its status as a national park has shifted since a 2010 declaration, a 2014 reversal and a reinstatement in March 2023, and it sits atop a former Pleistocene lakebed with salt deposits up to 1.5 meters thick.
