Ballena Marine National Park is a national park in Puntarenas Province in Costa Rica, part of the Osa Conservation Area. It was created by executive decree on 9 June 1992 as a protected area for migrating humpback whales, from which it takes its name, since ballena is the Spanish word for whale. The park covers about 5,160 hectares of marine waters and 171 hectares of land, and the whales it protects arrive to breed between December and April before traveling north to feeding grounds off the west coast of the United States and southern British Columbia from June to November.
