Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park, in eastern Jamaica near Kingston, takes its name from the Blue Mountains that run through it and from the turkey vulture, locally called the John crow, a common bird within the park. Covering about 495 square kilometers, or roughly 4.5 percent of Jamaica's land area, the park protects a mountain ecosystem recognized for exceptional biodiversity, including the giant swallowtail butterfly, the largest butterfly in the Western Hemisphere, the endangered Jamaican blackbird, the Jamaican boa and the Jamaican hutia. It was inscribed as a mixed UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, recognized for both its cultural and natural significance.
