Braulio Carrillo National Park

Braulio Carrillo National Park, established in 1978 and spanning parts of Heredia, Cartago, Limon, and San Jose provinces in central Costa Rica, covers about 476 square kilometers of the volcanic Cordillera Central near the capital, San Jose. An IUCN category II park in the Central Conservation Area, it is more than ninety percent primary forest ranging from high altitude cloud forest to lowland tropical rainforest, and it contains Barva Volcano along with three crater lakes, Barva, Danta, and Copey. The park shelters some 600 tree species, over 530 bird species, and 135 mammal species.
