Juan Castro Blanco National Park lies in Alajuela Province in northern Costa Rica, about 100 kilometers north of San Jose, within the Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area. It was established on 22 April 1992 and covers about 145 square kilometers containing three volcanoes, Platanar, Porvenir, and El Viejo. Its cloud forests serve as an important watershed for surrounding communities and support an estimated 2,000 plant species, including over 200 documented orchid species, along with about 57 mammal species, among them jaguars, tapirs, and howler monkeys, and more than 233 recorded bird species.
