Poas Volcano National Park

Poas Volcano National Park, established on January 25, 1971 in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica, covers about 65 square kilometers around the 2,700 meter summit of Poas Volcano. An IUCN category II park managed by the National System of Conservation Areas, it centers on a 290 meter wide active main crater that still produces geysers and gas emissions and has periodically closed to visitors for safety, along with two other craters, the extinct Von Frantzius and the long dormant Botos, whose cold, green crater lake lies within the park.
