Rincon de la Vieja National Park, established on October 23, 1973 in Guanacaste Province in northwestern Costa Rica, protects about 141 square kilometers around the Rincon de la Vieja and Santa Maria volcanoes, the more recent of which last erupted in 2017. An IUCN category II park forming part of the Guanacaste Conservation Area and the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste World Heritage Site, it is also home to the dormant Cerro Von Seebach, geothermal features including fumaroles and mudpots, more than 300 bird species, and mammals such as jaguars and cougars.
