Turrialba Volcano National Park surrounds the Turrialba Volcano in Cartago Province in Costa Rica, within the Central Conservation Area. It was established on 30 July 1955 and covers about 3,900 acres, offering views of the crater, the Caribbean plains, the Turrialba valley, and the Talamanca mountain range, and supporting 84 recorded bird species and 11 mammal species. The volcano erupted repeatedly between 1864 and 1868, and renewed volcanic activity beginning in 2014 produced ash clouds that affected parts of Costa Rica and temporarily closed the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose; the park was closed to visitors from 2012 until reopening on 4 December 2020, with a two kilometer safety perimeter around the crater still in effect.
