Yakushima National Park protects the Osumi Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, first protected in 1964 as part of Kirishima National Park and made independent on March 16, 2012, covering about 326 square kilometers over Yakushima island, Kuchinoerabu-jima and adjacent waters. Mount Miyanoura, its highest point, rises 1,936 meters, and the island's ancient cryptomeria forests, home to about 1,900 plant species, helped earn UNESCO World Heritage status in 1993.
