The gentlest recognized style of volcanic activity, in which highly fluid, gas-poor basaltic magma erupts as lava fountains and steady effusive flows rather than violent fragmentation, typical of the shield volcanoes of Hawaii for which the style is named. Because the erupting magma is so fluid, gas escapes relatively easily, producing spectacular but comparatively low-hazard lava fountaining rather than the ash-rich explosions of more viscous, gas-charged eruptions.
