Strike-slip faulting is horizontal motion in which the two blocks on either side of a near-vertical fault plane slide past one another laterally, with little or no vertical displacement. A transform fault is a strike-slip fault that accommodates plate motion at a plate boundary itself, the San Andreas Fault in California and the North Anatolian Fault in Turkey being the best-known examples, each capable of producing large, shallow, highly destructive earthquakes as stress accumulated by slow plate motion releases in sudden ruptures.
