A short, violent volcanic eruption driven by the sudden fracturing of a plug of solidified lava or highly viscous magma blocking a vent, releasing built-up gas pressure in a dense, ash-laden explosion that hurls blocks and bombs into the air. Named for Italy's Vulcano, eruptions of this style are typically brief but can recur repeatedly over an eruptive episode as fresh magma re-seals and then again ruptures the vent.
