The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protects a large part of Australia's Great Barrier Reef from damaging activities, established by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act of 1975 in response to mounting pressure from oil drilling proposals and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks. The marine park is zoned into areas of varying protection, from strict no-entry sanctuary zones to general-use zones that allow regulated fishing and tourism, and it is jointly administered by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority alongside the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Queensland Fisheries. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, and its coral cover has faced repeated mass bleaching events linked to rising ocean temperatures in the decades since. How much of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is closed to fishing?
About one third, 33.3 percent, since the 2004 rezoning; the rest is strictly regulated.
When the zoning plan took effect on 1 July 2004, the share of the park protected from extractive activities such as fishing rose from 4.6 percent to 33.3 percent. The rest of the park is a multiple-use marine park, where fishing and the removal of wildlife is strictly regulated rather than banned outright.
